Navigation Contest

Thank you for your interest in our monthly navigation contest. Only one entry per person is allowed. If you answer both questions correctly your name will be put into the monthly drawing for a $100 gift certificate. We had a lot of fun developing these questions for you. Questions will range form navigation history to equipment and terms. Have fun and good luck!

Peter Trogdon, President

  1. Lock systems are used to raise and lower boats so that they can navigate between bodies of water that are at different levels. A typical lock is a chamber filled with water that has gates at both ends. Boats enter the chamber through one end, the gate closes, the water level in the lock is raised or lowered and then the other gate opens and the boat exits.

There is another kind of lock called a lift lock that operates differently. It operates like a giant counter balance. There are two chambers side by side that sit on huge rams that move up and down inside water filled cylinders located underground. The cylinders are connected by a pipe which has a valve in the center. When this valve is closed the chambers are locked. When the valve is open the chambers begin to move. The upper chamber must always be heavier than the lower chamber. Visualize two giant bath tubs filled with water and boats. One goes up while the other goes down.

There are 9 of these lift locks in the world. Two of them are in North America. What canal systems are the two in North America associated with?
    A. Erie Canal System
    B. Rideau and Trent-Severn Canal Systems
    C. Rideau Canal System
    D. Trent-Severn Waterway

  2. What are the other countries with lift locks?
    A. England, Belgium, France
    B. England, Belgium, Germany
    C. Belgium, France, Austria, Germany
    D. The Netherlands, Belgium, France, England
